From modern bikes to a vintage penny-farthing, riders have taken to Australia’s most iconic bridge to raise funds and awareness for mental health.

Thousands of riders united on Sydney’s streets on Sunday for the 40th Spring Cycle, an event that partners with mental health charity Lifeline.

Under sunny skies, families, first-time riders and seasoned cyclists hit the road for their chance to cross the main deck of the Sydney Harbour Bridge without traffic.

One cyclist rocked a red penny-farthing and matching outfit while another stood out on a colourful recumbent tricycle adorned with a variety of national flags.

The event is more than a ride, according to Bicycle NSW chief executive Peter McLean.

“It’s a celebration of community, connection and the joy of cycling through one of the most vibrant cities in the world,” he said.

Olympic diver and event ambassador Sam Fricker said the atmosphere was “pretty incredible”.

“It was awesome to see everyone from kids and families through to serious cyclists out there together,” he said.

The riders were all smiles, with many raising their hands in celebration as they crossed the bridge.

Some took on the 10km city ride from Pyrmont while others tackled the longer 50km route, which finished with a festival at Parramatta Park.

Funds raised from the recreational ride will support Lifeline’s life-saving crisis support services.

“The event is a powerful reminder that simple actions like getting outside, moving together and connecting with others can make a real difference to our mental wellbeing,” chairman Steve Moylan said.

“We’re grateful to every rider and supporter helping Lifeline be there for anyone who needs us, 24 hours a day, seven days a week across our phone, text and chat services.”
