A couple in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district has been arrested for allegedly killing their newborn daughter and dumping her body in a pond, tied inside a plastic bag with bricks, after they were discharged from hospital, police said.

The newborn’s body, believed to be around two days old, was found in a pond on October 7. Police launched an investigation and registered a case against unidentified persons before tracing the child’s parents within two days.

The accused, identified as Suresh Rathwa and his wife, Sangeetaben Rathwa, allegedly confessed to the crime during questioning, police said. The couple already had a son and a daughter and did not want another girl, according to the police investigation.

HOW POLICE TRACED THE PARENTS

After recovering the newborn’s body, police formed five teams to investigate the case. Investigators collected birth records from maternity hospitals in nearby areas for the preceding week to identify families who had recently welcomed children.

During the inquiry, police found that several girls had been born at a hospital in the vicinity. Investigators contacted the families and verified details about their newborns.

The inquiry led them to the Rathwa couple, who had recently welcomed a daughter. Police said the couple’s responses during questioning raised suspicion, and they allegedly confessed after further interrogation.

BABY ALLEGEDLY THROWN INTO POND

According to the police, the couple said they did not want another daughter because they already had a son and a daughter.

They allegedly told investigators that they left on a motorcycle with the newborn after being discharged from hospital and threw her into a pond, placing her inside a plastic bag tied with bricks.

Police have arrested both parents and added murder charges to the case. Further investigation is underway.
