Three Indian nationals rescued from the Turkish-owned cargo vessel MV Royad Mammadov after it was attacked in the Black Sea earlier this week have left for India, the Indian Embassy in Bucharest said on Saturday.
The mission said the three men — Sahil Sandhu, Ashwini Kumar and Harman Singh — departed for India on Saturday after receiving support from the embassy. The vessel, carrying corn from Ukraine’s Izmail port to Ravenna in Italy, was struck on Monday while sailing in the Black Sea outside Romania’s territorial waters.

In a statement, the embassy said, “Three Indian nationals, Shri Sahil Sandhu, Shri Ashwini Kumar and Shri Harman Singh, departed for India today (Saturday).” It added, “The Embassy provided all necessary support and assistance to facilitate their return. We express our sincere gratitude to the Romanian authorities, Constana County Hospital, and the Romanian rescue teams for their invaluable assistance, cooperation and support.”
Two foreign seafarers were killed in the attack and several crew members were injured. All three Indian nationals survived. One of them was injured and received medical treatment in Romania. The nationality of those killed was not immediately known.
The embassy had said on October 7 that its representative visited the three Indian nationals rescued on October 6 from the vessel in the Black Sea. Two were accommodated in a hotel, while the third was undergoing treatment at the County Hospital in Constanta. The mission had said all three were in stable condition. It also said it had facilitated essential items, including mobile phones, through the shipping company’s local agent, while arranging Indian food through a local Indian restaurant. The embassy said it remained in close contact with the concerned authorities and continued to extend all necessary support.
According to the BIMCO-ICS Seafarer Workforce Report 2026, India has emerged as the world’s second-largest supplier of seafarers, contributing 311,936 maritime professionals to the global shipping industry. The report estimates that India now accounts for 12.16 per cent of the global seafaring workforce, behind only the Philippines and ahead of China, the Russian Federation and Indonesia. The latest development in Romania marks the return home of the three Indian survivors after the Black Sea attack.
