A 21-year-old man in a village in Telangana’s Medak district allegedly killed his mother by setting her ablaze over suspicion that she practised black magic.

The victim, Sayamma, 40, suffered severe burn injuries and died at the spot. The accused has been identified as her 21-year-old son, Durgesh.

He said Sayamma was supposedly attacked following a family dispute.

Ashok said the woman’s body was brought to a government hospital.

Upon receiving information of the murder, the police took Durgesh into custody and launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the incident.

Further details are awaited as the probe continues.

The incident comes weeks after a 65-year-old woman was beaten up and tied to a tree, allegedly by a group of people who accused her of practising witchcraft in a village near Hyderabad.

A video of the physical assault, which took place on September 23 at a village in Ranga Reddy district, went viral on social media.

A case was registered against 14 people on the basis of a complaint lodged by the woman’s son.

The complainant said that a group entered their house and thrashed his mother before tying her to a tree.

According to the police, the people involved in the assault had accused the woman of attempting to perform black magic on a minor boy.

The group also included women, per the police. According to the last update received on the case, the police had arrested some of the accused after registering the case.

The woman’s son alleged that he and other family members were also beaten by the crowd and that his car was damaged with sticks and stones.

The woman was rescued by the police. The villagers were also counselled, the local DCP had said in a statement.
