Download our Good Food app to explore all 500 Good Food Guide reviews, and pick up the paper tomorrow for the special Good Food Guide liftout.

The 100 Essential Restaurants list is the hero of the liftout, and is now available to browse in the Good Food app, before being published online on Thursday.

The list of 100 Essential Restaurants is not about scores and it’s not a ranking. What’s an Essential Restaurant, you ask? Hatted or not, an Essential Restaurant could be a legendary, once-in-a-lifetime institution or it could be just a few months old. It could be anywhere in the state. Pull up a stool, or sink into a plush chair at any one of them, and you’ll see how Victoria eats now. It’s a dining hit-list for the year ahead.

With more than 3,000 reviews and recommendations and expanded coverage of independent restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs across Victoria, NSW and the ACT, the Good Food app makes it easier to find where to eat.

Readers can browse The Age Good Food Guide in full, including the A-Z list, or explore collections of one-, two- and three-hat venues, Critics’ Picks, the 100 Essential Restaurants, regional restaurants, and the best cafes, bars and more.

The home of the Good Food Guide, the app is free for premium subscribers of The Age and also available as a standalone subscription. You can download the Good Food app here or search “Good Food” in the App Store or Google Play.

Melbourne fashion influencer Ginger says one of her favourite venues right now is Slowpoke in Collingwood.

The model and former stylist, whose profile Ginger’s World boasts more than 292k followers on Instagram, also reckons St Kilda is where it’s at for a cool vibe.

“It’s definitely coming back,” she says.

From one hat to three, here’s the essential list of every hat-winning restaurant in the 46th edition of The Age Good Food Guide.

Fun fact: More restaurants were awarded hats this year – a total of 147, up from 136 last year.

About 500 industry movers and shakers gathered this evening at The Timber Yard in Port Melbourne to find out if they’re actually the creme de la creme.

It’s a rare opportunity to mingle with all of Victorian hospitality’s elite in one room – but most attendees have to be personally invited to join. So who made the cut for the guest list?

We’ve got a few happy snaps from inside the room where it happened below, but for all the best photos from the 46th Age Good Food Guide awards, click here.

Michael Ryan rarely does Melbourne by halves when he’s in town, so where is the owner-chef of Beechworth’s two-hatted Provenance eating for this trip to the city?

“I was walking down Crossley Street on the weekend, and had zero intention of eating at Cote Basque again because I’ve been a couple of times already and loved it, but a wonderful waiter beckoned me in at the door and couldn’t help myself to answer the siren call,” he said.

With a family member recently moving to Preston, Ryan says he has also enjoyed the Mexican at Chabela, and looks forward to visiting Rosheen Kaul’s Little Rose in Fitzroy.

“I was a big fan of Little Rose when it was a pop-up, it had such great ‘get in before die’ energy.”

Let’s check in to see how the 10 contenders polled with readers. Looks like our T2 Tea Restaurant of the Year winner Yiaga is leading the pack.

MasterChef Australia winner Vinnie Gibaldi is loving his first Good Food Guide awards.

He says his favourite place right now is Bar Spontana, a little bar in Brunswick doing great Thai food. And Little Rose. Loves everything about it.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate our New Restaurant of the Year, Roma.

Good Food great Roslyn Grundy spent 34 years reviewing restaurants and recipes, but it was a venue opened in May that she chose as the site of her last long lunch with this masthead.

“We have a lot of Italian in Melbourne, but we don’t get much classic Roman food,” Grundy told Dani Valent of her reason for choosing the venue.

“It’s a fun and fresh idea to go into detail on a cuisine we might not have explored.”

It’s been a big night for Hugh Allen, who has walked away with Chef of the Year and Restaurant of the Year for Yiaga, a feat achieved while leading two three-hatted restaurants.

Here’s some fun video we captured of Allen while he was trying to wrangle all his frames for a photo:
