RJ Mitte’s heartbreaking final Instagram post reveals the actor was hoping to return to the screen as his iconic Breaking Bad character just days before his tragic death at the age of 34.
The actor, best known for playing Walter White Jr. in the acclaimed television drama, died on Monday in Texas, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
A county official confirmed the death to TMZ, which reported that Mitte died by suicide.
Representatives for the actor released a statement mourning his passing, stating: “It is with profound sadness we share the tragic passing of beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate RJ Mitte.”
“RJ Mitte was best known for his role as Walter ‘Flynn’ White Jr. on AMC’s critically acclaimed, award-winning series Breaking Bad.
“Drawing from his own experience living with cerebral palsy, Mitte brought authenticity to the role and built a platform on disability awareness and inclusion.”
At the age of only fifteen Mitte took on the role of Flynn, with the character also living with cerebral palsy.
With the popularity of the show soaring and his character becoming an important part of the show’s central family storyline, Mitte became a familiar face to television audiences around the world.
In his final post uploaded to Instagram last Thursday, the actor revealed he longed to take on the role of Flynn once more, in a clip from an interview with podcaster Joe Vulpis.
“I don’t think that was the end of of Skyler, Walt and Holly’s journey,” the actor told the podcaster when asked about the potential of a Breaking Bad spin-off.
“I think there’s a lot of unanswered questions there for them. There’s more to be told. There’s always more to be told, but you got to tell it right.
“If something happens in the future with the show, you know, the fans control that. The fans control what continues to get made.”
The enthusiastic podcast host eagerly claimed a show that followed the White family would likely do very well and go “right to the top of any streaming site”, with the potential of doing “even better” than the original show.
“See that’s that’s the hardest thing,” Mitte responded.
“I set a bar for myself as a young man that is kind of unattainable. And I tell people, I say, look, it’s a long way down from the top of the mountain.”
His co-star and TV parent Bryan Cranston, 70, issued a statement on social media on Tuesday in the wake of the tragic news.
“I’m in deep despair as I write this tonight. RJ Mitte, my sweet son on Breaking Bad has died,” Cranston wrote, noting that he first met the actor when he was just 14.
“Born with Cerebral Palsy, he never – ever – allowed that challenge to be an excuse for anything. He met the demanding shooting schedule head on with great determination.”

Cranston revealed that Mitte was “pretty raw” when the show first started, but went onto to grow into a “really fine actor” – and an vocal advocate for performers with disabilities.
“All that promise and potential now is such a loss. It is especially devastating to hear that he took his own life. Why?” he continued.
The star went on to share that he and Mitte were last in contact “just a few weeks ago,” texting to arrange future lunch plans.
“I don’t know if that lunch would have changed his future…But I do know that I loved him, and thoroughly enjoyed being with him throughout the years on the series, and after the spotlight on Breaking Bad dimmed…I’ll miss you, son.”
Beyond the award-winning drama, Mitte appeared in productions including The Oak Room, The Recall and The Guardians of Justice (Will Save You!).
He also used his profile to advocate for greater opportunities and representation for actors with disabilities in the entertainment industry.
In a 2019 interview with TMZ, Mitte spoke about the need for Hollywood to provide more roles and opportunities for performers living with disabilities.

Outside his acting career, Mitte was engaged to Kennedy Suarez, having proposed in 2025 following several years together.
His representatives also paid tribute to his work away from the screen and the causes he supported throughout his life.
“He also served as president of The Mitte Foundation, supporting philanthropic efforts and community initiatives, while using his platform to challenge stereotypes and promote greater representation for people with disabilities.
“At this time, we ask people to respect the privacy of RJ Mitte’s family and close ones.”
