Proposals for eco-sensitive zones within Rajaji National Park and Valley of Flowers National Park should balance environmental conservation with the interests of local communities, Uttarakhand government officials said on Thursday, according to news agency Press Trust of India.

The state government is reviewing the proposed zones, including their boundaries, management plans, monitoring mechanisms and the activities that would be prohibited, regulated or permitted within them.

Uttarakhand Principal Secretary for Environment Protection and Climate Change R K Sudhanshu discussed these issues at a review meeting on Thursday.

“The proposals must be rigorously evaluated, taking into account the geographical conditions, environmental sensitivity, and the needs of the local population. While preparing proposals for eco-sensitive zones, a balance should be maintained between ecological conservation and local sentiments, ensuring that both environmental protection and local interests are given due consideration,” Sudhanshu said, as quoted by PTI.

He directed officials to examine all aspects of the proposals and take the necessary follow-up action. They were also told to coordinate with the Central Pollution Control Board and the State Pollution Control Board over activities within the proposed zones.

For the proposed eco-sensitive zones around Rajaji National Park, Sudhanshu instructed officials to seek guidance at the next Cabinet meeting on addressing the challenges involved.

He also called for legal advice and directed officials to prepare a formal response outlining the current situation in the state. The response must be submitted within a week in compliance with Supreme Court directions.

Sudhanshu further stressed the need to monitor movement within the area and assess how many tourists it can accommodate without causing harm.

The review focused on ensuring that the proposed eco-sensitive zones protect Rajaji National Park and Valley of Flowers National Park while taking local concerns, legal requirements and tourism pressures into account.
