Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the child’s death, with CCTV footage reportedly pointing to the involvement of the minor.
According to police, the victim was a 2-year-old girl who had moved into the residential complex with her family on October 1, around 15 days before the incident. The child was reportedly living in flat 602 with her parents.
The incident occurred at around 10:30 pm on Wednesday, when the toddler was allegedly pushed into an open duct from the sixth floor.
A review of the available CCTV footage reportedly showed a 12-year-old girl lifting the toddler and pushing her into the open duct.
The footage also captured the child falling from the sixth floor, followed by the minor allegedly running away from the spot.
The girl was subsequently seen riding a bicycle in the passage on the same floor, according to the police official.
CCTV FOOTAGE BEING EXAMINED
The case came to light after investigators examined the available CCTV recordings to establish the sequence of events leading to the toddler’s death.
The victim’s parents have alleged that the minor girl’s family attempted to conceal the incident by switching off the CCTV cameras.
According to the initial account, the minor’s mother allegedly went to the society office and deleted CCTV footage in an attempt to destroy evidence.
However, cyber experts reportedly recovered the deleted recordings, which helped investigators examine the events preceding the child’s death.
The allegations concerning the CCTV footage and the suspected attempt to conceal evidence are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police are also looking into the circumstances in which the toddler was taken to the sixth-floor duct and the events that followed.
POLICE PROBING ALL ANGLES
An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered in connection with the incident, a police official said, adding that investigators were examining all possible angles before reaching any conclusions.
“The toddler’s body has been sent for post-mortem. A detailed investigation into the sequence of events and allegations made by the victim’s family is currently underway,” news agency PTI quoted the official as saying.
Reports have identified the suspected minor as either 10 or 12-years-old, with the exact age yet to be conclusively established in the available accounts. The minor girl and her mother have reportedly been detained by police for questioning.
Investigators are expected to examine the recovered CCTV footage, record statements from the families and other residents, and verify the allegations regarding the alleged destruction of evidence.
Further details are likely to emerge as the investigation progresses and the post-mortem findings become available.
