Veteran actor Aruna Irani has returned to work more than 50 days after the death of her husband, filmmaker Kuku Kohli. The director died on August 25 at the age of 77 after suffering a massive heart attack. Aruna shared a video on Instagram, in which she thanked her fans and well-wishers for supporting her through this difficult period.

The video, posted on Sunday, marked her first public comments about her husband’s death. The actor became emotional as she spoke about the affection she had received from people following Kohli’s demise.

“I’m very, very grateful to all the love and affection you’ve given me after Kuku ji’s death,” she said, adding that the support had helped her cope with the loss.

Aruna further explained that the encouragement she received had given her the strength to return to work. She also asked her fans to continue showering her with the same love and support throughout her life.

Several people from the film and television industries, along with fans, responded to her post with messages of encouragement.

Actor Sudha Chandran was among those who extended her support. She called Aruna her idol and sent her love, blessings and wishes to stay strong.

Aruna, 80, was visibly distressed at Kohli’s last rites in Mumbai. She was accompanied by family members and friends to the Oshiwara crematorium, where the final rituals were performed.

Aruna was last seen in filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj’s action thriller O’Romeo, which was released earlier this year.

How Aruna Irani and Kuku Kohli fell in love

Aruna first met Kuku Kohli in 1990 while working on his film Kohram, an action-adventure project that was released in 1991.

In a 2024 interview with Zoom, the actor recalled that their initial interactions were not always pleasant. Kohli had asked her to give him dates for a month for the film, but she later informed the team that she would not be able to complete the commitment.

Aruna said Kohli was unhappy with her decision. However, they continued working together, and he would sometimes contact her even when she had no work scheduled. She recalled feeling irritated by his calls at the time.

Despite their initial differences, their relationship eventually developed into love, and the two got married.

Their marriage remained private for years because Kohli was already married and had two daughters from his first marriage.

In a 2023 interview with ANI, Aruna spoke about the difficult decision to keep their relationship away from public attention. She said Kohli had stood up for their marriage and explained that she never wanted their relationship to cause pain to anyone.

Aruna has also spoken about the criticism she faced because of her relationship with Kohli. Addressing the concerns expressed by his first wife, Rita Kohli, the veteran actor said she did not believe she alone should be held responsible for the situation.

She argued that responsibility within a marriage rested with both partners and that the husband should also be held accountable for his decisions.

Aruna maintained that she had not entered the relationship with the intention of breaking up a family or hurting anyone. She also acknowledged that relationships could be complicated and that the reasons behind a third person entering a relationship were not always easy to explain.
