Michael C. Hall has loved returning to Dexter and seeing him “evolving in ways that he never imagined”.
The 55-year-old actor, who first played Dexter Morgan across eight seasons of the Showtime series from 2006 to 2013, has reprised his role since 2021 in New Blood and now Resurrection, with the latter set to return for a second season later this month.
Reflecting on his character’s midlife crisis, Michael told Extra: “I don’t think he ever really imagined himself at this stage of his life. He didn’t really think he’d make it this far…
“I think a part of why it’s fun to return to the show has to do with the writers’ ability to take him in new places and evolve him or force him to evolve in ways that he never imagined and that I never imagined he would.”
The trailer for the second season shoes an older and wiser Dexter, who finds himself in at a difficult crossroads.
The logline teases: “[He’s] caught between two killers – one with decades of notoriety and a lifetime of kills behind him, and the other a fresh young face terrorising New York in ways no one has ever seen.
“Meanwhile, Dexter battles a new and unexpected enemy: a mid-life crisis. Harrison [Jack Alcott] continues his own pursuit of justice as father and son face their darkest chapter yet.”
Michael has enjoyed seeing the juxtaposition the character is facing.
He added: “To see him at this juncture in his life with maybe more of it behind him than ahead of him has been fun and I think it creates in him an appetite to be recognised and appreciated which is very much at odds with his desire not to be caught.”
Dexter: Resurrection has also taken the vigilante killer from Miami to New York, which has become its own “character”.
Michael explained: “It is a character in the show. It has an energy.
“It infuses the show with a new energy. I think it’s a big part of what revitalises this new version.
“It’s an interesting sort of counterpart… Miami is soft and sort of wide open and humid and lush and New York is hard edges and concrete and defined.”
