Cameron Bancroft has scored his first Sheffield Shield century of the season, hours before Australia were to start their first innings at Newlands.

Bancroft had made 107 and Jayden Goodwin was 76, taking Western Australia to 1-194 at tea against South Australia.

WA had won the toss on Wednesday at Adelaide Oval.

After Nathan McAndrew had Sam Whiteman caught by Mackenzie Harvey at first slip for one, all the honours had gone to Bancroft and Goodwin with their 181-run partnership.

Bancroft’s previous highest Shield score in two matches this season was 16.

This is the first time Australia have played a Test at Newlands in Cape Town since 2018, now infamously known as Sandpapergate.

Bancroft was banned for nine months, after he was caught by TV cameras using sandpaper to doctor the ball while fielding.

Steve Smith and David Warner were also banned over the scandal, which rocked Australian cricket.

Bancroft returned to the Test team for two matches in the 2019 Ashes series.

This is the 33-year-old’s 21st Shield ton. He had hit 12 fours and a six in his unbeaten 209-ball knock.
