A home in Sydney’s inner west has been targeted in an act of “malicious damage”, just days after another home on the same street was burned down in a harrowing act of vandalism.

Just before 3.30am on Saturday, police were called to Weddle Ave in Abbotsford after a driveway was “spray painted and covered in petrol” by a pair of unknown offenders.

The two people were spotted leaving the area in a 4WD, with no other clear descriptions of the perpetrators or the car given.

NSW Police Acting Inspector Dennis Drean said officers had “ramped up (their) presence in the area”.

“We have assistance from different police resources. We mobilised around the area, not just on the ground but also with the sky, to ensure the community is safe because that’s our priority,” he said.

According to reporting from The Daily Telegraph, the spray paint on the driveway reads “Junkie Dog, don’t run your mouth”.

The incident comes days after another home on the same street was torched before the alleged offender – a 17-year-old boy – then accidentally set himself on fire and fled the scene.

An 88-year-old woman was rescued from the balcony of the home, with her son, daughter-in-law and another person, suffering from smoke inhalation.

Detectives attached to Strike Force Sweetenham, Burwood Police Area Command and officers from the State Crime Commands Arson Squad arrested the teen at a home on Blackwood Road, Merrylands at 11pm on the same day.

At the time, Burwood Police Area Commander Superintendent Christine McDonald on Tuesday praised the police officers and local residents who came to the elderly woman’s aid.

“I am incredibly proud of the police and the 49-year-old civilian who rescued that woman,” she said.

“They saved her life.”

Police are still searching for the perpetrators of the most recent incident, and the 17-year-old accused arsonist remains before the courts.
