Bengaluru: Two foreign nationals died after allegedly suffering electric shocks while swimming in the pool of a five-star hotel in Bengaluru on Friday evening, Ocotber 30. The incident occurred at the Conrad Hotel, located in the Ulsoor area, triggering a police investigation into possible safety lapses.
The deceased have been identified as Alexander Maximilian Theiss, 57, a German national and crew member of Lufthansa Airlines, and Juraj Horvat, 45, a Slovakian citizen who worked as a project manager with IBM.
The tragedy unfolded at the swimming pool on the hotel’s third floor when the two men had gone for a swim. Two others, who attempted to rescue them, also suffered injuries in the incident.
They have been identified as Mathew Desantis, 41, an American national staying at the hotel as a tourist, and Rahul Tiwari, 28, a hotel employee working as a pool attendant and lifeguard. Both were rushed to Manipal Hospital for treatment and are reported to be out of danger.
Police have registered a case and begun an investigation to establish the circumstances that led to the deaths. The suspected cause is electrocution, though the exact source of the electrical fault has not yet been officially confirmed.
The incident has raised questions about electrical safety and maintenance arrangements at the hotel’s swimming pool. Investigators are expected to examine the pool’s electrical installations and other safety systems as part of the probe.
The hotel management has not issued any public statement on the incident so far. However, a notification on the hotel’s website on Saturday morning stated that the swimming pool would remain closed for maintenance from October 31 to November 30.
Conrad is a luxury 24-storey hotel operated under the Hilton group. With standard room rates reportedly starting at around Rs 25,000 a night, the incident has raised concerns over the safety standards maintained at the premium property.
The police investigation is expected to establish whether an electrical malfunction or any lapse in maintenance contributed to the deaths.
