People deserve it: Elon Musk after Sam Altman claims PC users are hogging all RAM

There is no love lost between Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. The two never miss a chance to outshine one another. And Musk seems to have found one such opportunity after his nemesis made a rather controversial remark on RAMs in PCs.

In a post on X, Elon Musk appeared to take a dig at Sam Altman for not wanting users to have more RAM in their PCs. Posting a meme on X, Musk wrote, “The people deserve to have their RAM too!”

The meme itself was based on the opening scene of the film Inglourious Basterds. The meme shows an SS officer say, “You are withholding DRAM from the cloud, are you not?” Musk likely implied that similar to the film, Altman was questioning people for hiding RAM from AI data centres.

What did Sam Altman say?

The post followed Altman’s appearance on the Cheeky Pint podcast. During the episode, the OpenAI CEO claimed that AI data centres needed the limited supply of RAM that was partly going to PCs.

“From a global allocation perspective, actually, it’s quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world’s limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used 5 per cent of the time,” Sam Altman said. “You want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you’re trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment. And somehow many people’s intuition is the opposite of that.”

Many agreed with Musk’s comments. Some even shared their own memes under his post, including one that read, “Tell Sam Altman I use 64GB of RAM to play roller coaster tycoon. I want him to know it was me.” Elon Musk replied to the meme with a laughing emoji.

Many joined in on Musk’s take.

Another user made a reference to Elon Musk’s “Scam Altman” nickname for the OpenAI CEO. “Scam Altman won’t stop thieving,” they said.

Some even used Elon Musk’s phrase for Altman.

Elon Musk and Sam Altman have a long history. While the two co-founded OpenAI in 2015, Musk later left the AI startup, claiming, “OpenAI is on a path of certain failure.” Since then, the tech trillionaire has accused Altman of betraying the AI startup’s original mission of developing AI for the benefit of humanity.

Why is there a RAM crisis?

Demand from AI data centres has outstripped global supply for memory chips – RAM and NAND. For the most part, manufacturers have shifted capacity from consumer electronics towards higher-margin AI memory. This has also led to a rise in the prices of electronics, including smartphones and PCs.

Hyperscalers, such as OpenAI and Anthropic, have also secured long-term agreements, leaving memory makers with less flexibility to serve consumer products. As per reports, it is likely that this memory crisis is not going to ease anytime soon. Previously, Zoho cofounder Sridhar Vembu had claimed that rising memory prices had made business difficult for his company.

While Elon Musk has mentioned that consumers deserve to have RAM, recently, the SpaceX CEO claimed that humanoid robots will have an even higher demand for RAM than the demand AI data centres have today.
