Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek has unveiled “Super-Agent”, a new prototype AI tool designed to make software development faster and easier. This open-source tool directly challenges Claude Code, a highly popular AI coding assistant made by US-based Anthropic.

According to a report by Bloomberg, DeepSeek’s Super Agent is very different from traditional AI chatbots. Usually, developers have to type in a prompt or ask a question to get a piece of code or a solution. Super Agent, however, works on its own. It can actively monitor group chats among developers, spot coding problems in real-time, and suggest fixes without waiting for any human instructions.

The goal, according to a user manual posted on GitHub, is for the AI to take up “as little human attention as possible” while delivering maximum value. This shifts AI from just being a smart answering machine to acting more like an active, independent team member.

The US-China AI Rivalry

The launch of Super Agent was announced on WeChat by DeepSeek’s newly formed Harness team. This development highlights the growing competition between tech companies in the US and China. Both countries are racing to build AI tools that can automate complex professional tasks like software programming. Anthropic has been a dominant force in this space, but DeepSeek wants to offer a highly efficient, accessible, and affordable alternative.

DeepSeek has already been winning over developers with its powerful technology. Its recent V4.1-Flash models support long-context workloads while sharply reducing memory requirements. These efficiency gains, along with reported improvements in coding, reasoning, and agentic tasks, make the models appealing to programmers.

A Massive $15 Billion Boost

To support its ambitious goals, DeepSeek is backing up its technology with a lot of money. Bloomberg reports that the Hangzhou-based startup recently raised about 100 billion yuan (roughly $15 billion) in one of China’s largest recent funding rounds. Major players like battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) and Tencent (the company behind WeChat) were among the top investors.

This massive influx of cash will help DeepSeek speed up its AI research and development as it prepares for a planned Initial Public Offering (IPO).

However, it is important to note that Super Agent is currently just a prototype. DeepSeek’s public documentation clarifies that it is still a piece of research software, rather than a final product ready for commercial use. Still, it is a clear sign that the Chinese startup is making an aggressive push to become the default AI assistant for coding teams around the world.
