At least four people were killed and 88 others injured after two passenger trains collided in Egypt’s Giza province on Sunday, triggering the derailment of several carriages and disrupting rail services on a major railway line, the country’s Health Ministry said.

The collision occurred around 76 km south of Cairo when a passenger train travelling from Giza to Fayoum rammed into the rear of another train heading from Cairo to Aswan, according to Egypt’s state railway authority.

The impact caused several carriages to derail, prompting emergency response teams to rush to the accident site. Rescue workers were engaged in clearing the wreckage and assisting those affected by the collision.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ordered a swift investigation into the accident and directed that anyone found responsible for negligence be held accountable, according to a separate statement.

The railway authority said efforts were under way to clear the damaged coaches and restore services along the Cairo-Upper Egypt railway line. However, it did not specify how long the disruption was likely to continue.

The cause of the collision was not immediately clear, and authorities had not provided further details about the circumstances leading to the crash.
