Artificial intelligence is changing the world we live in. It might feel good, it might feel not so good, but the fact remains that it is making what once seemed impossible closer to reality. And perhaps one of the areas where AI is already making the biggest difference for humanity is in science and medicine. Researchers are using AI today to solve complex problems, understand diseases and speed up the search for new treatments. But Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, believes this is only the beginning. He predicts that in the next 5-10 years, AI could help humans cure most diseases.

Amodei’s optimism about AI came through in his latest post on X, where he defended his views on both the risks and benefits of the technology. Pushing back against the criticism that his messaging has been too negative or focused too much on AI risks, the Anthropic CEO said his message has always been about balancing the two. “I do not agree that my messaging has been disproportionately negative. In fact, it has been about equally balanced between risks and benefits,” he wrote.
Amodei pointed to his earlier essays and interviews, where he has highlighted the potential benefits of AI, including Machines of Loving Grace. He said he wrote the essay because he “didn’t feel the AI industry was painting an inspiring enough picture of how the technology could radically transform the world for the better”.
“The bulk of the essay is devoted to refuting skepticism of AI’s potential in health and biology,” he added.
In the essay, Amodei explains how he sees AI accelerating progress in biology and medicine. And in his latest post, he continues to stand by that view, arguing that AI could go far beyond simply analysing medical data. “I am not talking about AI as merely a tool to analyze data. I’m talking about using AI to perform, direct, and improve upon nearly everything biologists do,” he wrote.
“Thus, it’s my guess that powerful AI could at least 10x the rate of these discoveries, giving us the next 50-100 years of biological progress in 5-10 years.”
The hope around development of AI for disease research and cures also comes from a personal place for Amodei. In the same post, he revealed that he lost his father to Hepatitis C. “I feel the urgency here: I lost my father to Hepatitis C only a few years before the development of direct-acting antivirals (sofosbuvir), which cure 95 per cent of patients and probably would have cured him.”
Meanwhile, Amodei is not alone in making such an ambitious prediction about AI and medicine. Former Google DeepMind CEO and Nobel laureate Demis Hassabis has also spoken about AI potentially bringing an end to many diseases in coming years.
In one of his interviews with CBS News, Hassabis said he believed AI could help bring about what he called “the end of disease”, potentially within the next decade. “So on average, it takes, you know, 10 years and billions of dollars to design just one drug. We can maybe reduce that down from years to maybe months or maybe even weeks.” he said.
“This would revolutionise human health,, one day maybe we can cure all disease with the help of AI”.
