An elderly father recovering from a stroke was killed after he was hit by a reversing rubbish truck near his Queens Park home with his wife tragically discovering her dying husband on the road.
An Yu, 70, was on his morning walk when he was hit by a City of Canning Volvo rubbish truck on Balaka Way around 8.50am on Monday.
Shocking CCTV obtained by 7NEWS showed the stroke survivor wandering into the path of the reversing truck,
It was reported Mr Yu’s wife was on her way to an English class when she found her husband on the road, metres from their home.
She managed to exchange final words with her husband before he was transported to Royal Perth Hospital, according to 7NEWS.
WA Police said the 70-year-old pedestrian died at hospital.
A family friend told 7NEWS that the elderly man was found on the floor bleeding by his wife. It was reported it took paramedics eight minutes to arrive at the scene.
A nearby resident said Mr Yu would “always wave” and seemed like a “sweet man.”
“It’s very sad …. because I always see him when I leave the house,” she said.
“He always waves at me, he was a sweet man and also took care of my cats a lot.
Mr Yu’s two daughters, who live overseas, were making their way to Perth after his death.
Major crash investigators are examining the scene of the crash. The 59-year-old truck driver, who was reportedly experienced, was uninjured.
City of Canning Mayor Patrick Hall said the truck had reverse sensors and cameras installed.
“We have all the laser equipment you’d expect on these trucks,” he said.
“We’ll wait for the WA Police to conduct and complete their investigation.
“I’m sure there will be something we will learn from that.”
