Initially, the couple moved to Hyderabad and planned to get jobs and save up for their wedding. However, they turned to chain-snatching and were arrested. The accused, Annapu Reddy Durga Ramana Reddy, 23, and Tenka Varalaxmi, 24, were arrested by Vanasthalipuram police for allegedly snatching a gold chain weighing around 30 grams from an elderly woman at a temple in Hasthinapuram.
According to the police, the couple took to chain snatching after failing to get jobs in Hyderabad. Addressing the media, the police said that the incident occurred at 6:04 AM on October 18, at the Raja Rajeshwari Temple in Venkata Ramana Colony, Hasthinapuram.
The victim, 65-year-old Rmuluamma, was cleaning the temple premises when Reddy and Varalaxmi approached her. According to the police, Varalakshmi caught hold of the victim and covered her mouth, while Reddy pulled the mangalsutra from her neck.
The couple fled the place on a two-wheeler. No devotees were present at the temple during the incident. Based on a complaint, the Vanasthalipuram police registered a case of theft and launched an investigation.
