Apple reportedly revealed that its foldable iPhone Duo now has more than 100,000 apps optimised for its unusual display, just two weeks after the device went on sale. For those who don’t know, the recently launched iPhone Duo runs iOS 27.1, and when unfolded, its wide panel means the majority of older mobile apps struggle to work seamlessly. But the Cupertino giant assured that developers are quickly embracing the new form factor, with thousands of apps receiving updates every day.

In a statement reported by The Verge, Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, said the company has been encouraged by the response from developers. “It’s been wonderful to see how quickly developers have embraced iPhone Duo, and we’re grateful for their creativity and innovation,” Prescott said in a statement. She added that the number of optimised apps on the App Store continues to grow, with developers accelerating updates as more people begin using the foldable.
However, having thousands of apps ready for the iPhone Duo does not necessarily mean every app offers a great experience on its larger display.
Why some apps look awkward on iPhone Duo
When the iPhone Duo launched, users noticed that even Instagram, despite carrying Apple’s “Made for iPhone Duo” label, had some interface problems. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri also described the foldable as a “bit of a tricky form factor”.
The problem is that designing an app for a conventional iPhone is not the same as building one for a device that switches between a regular phone screen and a much larger inner display.
Apps that have not been updated can appear inside a smaller window when the Duo is unfolded, leaving empty space around them. Others may stretch their existing layouts across the wider screen, making buttons, images and navigation elements look misplaced.
Apple wants developers to rethink app design
Apple is encouraging developers to build apps using its latest iOS 27.1 software development kit (SDK), which allows applications to use the full inner display and adapt their interface as users fold or unfold the device.
This also means developers need to rethink how their apps behave on the larger screen. Instead of simply stretching a phone interface, they can introduce layouts that make better use of the available space, such as displaying multiple sections side by side.
Apple has also introduced tools in Xcode to help developers identify layout problems and test how their apps respond to resizing.
The company says all apps can run on iPhone Duo, but those built with newer development tools are better equipped to take advantage of its displays.
