Apple is expected to unveil the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 on September 9, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. While Apple has yet to confirm that the new watches will be part of the event, the company has announced its “Surprise and shine” special event for September 9. And with September traditionally being the month when Apple introduces its new iPhones and Apple Watch models, it looks like we could once again see the new smartphone and watches sharing the stage. With the event now just 10 days away, rumours about the next-generation Apple Watches are also picking up, with new health-tracking features, a stronger focus on wellness and hardware upgrades expected to be among the key highlights.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 are unlikely to get a major redesign this year. Instead, Apple is expected to bring a mix of performance improvements, new finishes and software changes. Earlier rumours of Touch ID on the Apple Watch also appear unlikely to materialise this year.

Here is everything expected from the new-generation of Apple Watches.

Apple Watch could get more continuous heart-rate tracking

One of the interesting features Apple is reportedly testing is more continuous heart-rate monitoring. Gurman says the new feature would allow the Apple Watch’s heart-rate sensor to collect data throughout the day, rather than only checking when it senses activity or at regular intervals.
The idea behind the continuous tracking is said to give users a more complete picture of their heart-rate patterns across the day.

Apple wants to make health tracking more useful

Apple is also rumoured to be working on a revamped Health and Fitness app experience. The company is said to be looking at ways to surface more wellness-related metrics, in a direction similar to popular health platforms from Whoop and Oura. This could help users better understand their overall health, rather than just their workout data.

Ceramic Apple Watch could make a comeback

On the hardware front, Apple has reportedly tested white and dark grey ceramic cases for the Series 12. The material was previously used for the highest-end Apple Watch models, including the Apple Watch Series 3 in 2017.

Gurman also says Apple is preparing several new band colours and configurations. However, don’t expect the ceramic finish to be accompanied by a radical change in the overall design. The Series 12 and Ultra 4 are expected to remain broadly similar to their predecessors this year.

A faster chip, but no big redesign yet

Performance should still get an upgrade. The Series 11 and Ultra 3 use the S10 chip, and the next-generation watches will reportedly move to an S11 or newer chip. That could make this the first notable Apple Watch performance improvement in several years.

The bigger redesign, however, appears to be further away. Gurman says Apple is working on a significant Apple Watch redesign that could arrive in another year or two. So, for 2026, the focus looks less like a visual overhaul and more like making the Apple Watch a better health and wellness companion.

No Apple Watch SE 4

Apple Watch SE 4 is also reportedly not expected this year. For now, the September 9 launch looks set to focus on better health tracking, a revamped wellness experience, faster performance and new case and band options. Meanwhile, the major focus will be more on the Pro iPhones and the rumored iPhone Fold.
