Apple may not be ready to give up on its Vision Pro dream just yet. The company is reportedly working on a completely redesigned Vision Pro-style headset even as it shifts much of its attention towards smart glasses. The new headset, currently being developed under the codename N224, is still in the early stages and could look very different from the current model.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is exploring around four different designs for the new headset. One of them could use an approach similar to Meta’s upcoming VR glasses, where some of the computing hardware and battery are moved outside the headset. Gurman writes that Apple is looking for a way to make the device “cheaper and lighter,” though the project is still uncertain and may not launch at all.
Apple wants to fix Vision Pro’s biggest problem
The Vision Pro went on sale in February 2024 with plenty of attention around it, but its high price and heavy design have made it difficult to turn into a mass-market product. Apple has reportedly explored several ways to fix that problem over the past few years, only to cancel or shelve multiple projects.
Now, the company appears to be trying again. Apple is said to be experimenting with different materials and designs to cut down the headset’s weight. It is also considering an external computing puck that could house the processor and battery. The idea could make the headset itself lighter, although some senior executives reportedly believe carrying an external device would make the experience less convenient.
The current Vision Pro can weigh around 800 grams depending on the headband, while its starting price in the US is $3,499 (roughly Rs 3,35,962). That combination has made comfort and affordability two of the biggest challenges for Apple’s spatial-computing ambitions.
Smart glasses are Apple’s bigger bet for now
Interestingly, the new headset isn’t Apple’s main focus at the moment. The company is reportedly concentrating more heavily on smart glasses, with a launch targeted for the end of 2027. That would put Apple directly against Meta’s growing Ray-Ban smart glasses lineup.
Apple is also said to be exploring other wearable products, including AirPods with cameras and a screenless wearable band.
As for the next Vision headset, patience may be required. If the N224 project survives Apple’s internal reviews, Gurman says it is unlikely to arrive before late 2028 or early 2029.
For now, Apple seems to be trying to figure out one thing: how to make Vision Pro feel less like a heavy computer strapped to your face and more like something people would actually want to wear every day.
