At an age when many people begin to slow down, Dr. Renu Tripathi is still looking for new ways to reach students. The 63-year-old science teacher at Government Girls’ Inter College in Vijay Nagar, Ghaziabad, has been selected for the National Teachers’ Award 2026, along with 47 other school teachers from across the country. President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to present the award at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Teachers’ Day, September 5.

For Tripathi, teaching has never been limited to a classroom, a blackboard or a textbook.
She uses models, experiments and field visits to help students understand scientific concepts through observation and practical learning. She also uses digital platforms, teaching science through her two YouTube channels and developing online educational content.
Her approach is simple: difficult subjects should not remain difficult simply because they are written in complicated language.
Topics such as heredity, evolution, plant cells and atomic structure are explained through activities and experiments designed to make them easier for students to understand. She has also developed teaching resources in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Her connection with education, however, began before she became a teacher.
In 1987, Tripathi joined the Uttar Pradesh government as a Project Officer, working to bring school dropouts back into the education system. Assigned to the Muradnagar area, she worked across 60 villages. According to the account of her work, the effort resulted in children returning to school across the area.
That experience eventually influenced her decision to enter teaching. She left her first government job and chose a profession that would keep her directly connected with students.
Since 2006, she has been teaching science at the Ghaziabad government school.
Over the years, some of her students have gone on to become doctors, engineers, scientists and government employees. Meanwhile, Tripathi expanded her own work beyond the classroom. She has authored 12 books related to science and education and created digital learning material for students.
Her selection for the National Teachers’ Award comes as she approaches retirement. She is expected to retire next year, but she does not see that as the end of her work in education.
Tripathi plans to continue teaching after retirement, with a particular focus on children from underprivileged backgrounds and orphaned children.
For her, the classroom may change, and technology may continue to evolve, but the purpose remains the same: helping children learn.
At 63, she is preparing to carry that purpose into yet another chapter.
