Australian swimmer Isaac Cooper has stepped down from the Dolphins’s leadership group after a drinking session at the Commonwealth Games.

Cooper was reported to be out drinking when he was expected to be supporting teammates at Glasgow’s Tollcross International Swimming Centre last Wednesday night.

Cooper was also seen drinking at the Australian team hotel during that day, the report said.

“Isaac did not attend the final night of the swimming competition or final team meeting in Glasgow, which is in conflict with team expectations,” a Swimming Australia statement said.

“Isaac has since voluntarily stood down from the team’s athlete leadership group.”

Cooper was scheduled to race the 100m backstroke final that night but withdrew from the event after qualifying eighth-fastest.

Swimmers were expected to support teammates at the Glasgow Games when not racing, while Cooper also missed the team meeting that night.

The 22-year-old won gold at the Glasgow Games as a member of the 4x100m medley team after swimming in the heats.

He also finished sixth in the 50m backstroke final, an event he won a silver medal at the 2024 world championships.

Cooper will next compete at the Pan Pacific championships in the United States starting August 12.
