Communication Minister Annika Wells has revealed plans to assess Australia Post’s long-term viability and accessibility in a new parliamentary inquiry.

Australia Post has operated for more than 200 years, but demand for its mail service has fallen and foot traffic has declined at some post offices in recent years.

The rise of online retailers is also affecting and reshaping how postal services are delivered across the globe.

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications, the Arts and Sport will hold an inquiry into Australia’s postal network to ensure Australia Post keeps pace with changing community needs.

The Committee will consider ways to diversify the organisation’s services through the post office network, with a focus on supporting community and commercial viability.

Businesses, stakeholders and residents will have an opportunity to help shape the future of the postal network through the inquiry before the committee delivers its recommendations in the second quarter of 2027.

Communications Minister Anika Wells said changing consumer behaviour and commercial conditions presented significant challenges to the sustainability of the national postal service, reflecting experiences globally.

“That’s why I’ve asked the House committee to explore how we can better support a sustainable and accessible postal service that delivers for all Australians,” she said.

An Australia Post spokesman said they wanted to work with stakeholders to build a modern service.

“As essential national infrastructure, we connect communities, support businesses, help the economy grow and provide a lifeline during natural disasters, particularly in regional and remote areas,” a spokesman said.

“For several years, we have highlighted the growing challenges facing Australia Post, which are shared by postal organisations around the world.

“We welcome the government’s action to address these challenges and support our long-term sustainability.”

Last month, Australia Post was grilled at a senate inquiry over a secret document that allegedly revealed a plan to shut down postal services.

Australia Post chief executive Paul Graham defended the claim saying it was a report only concerned with a buyback program for licensees under financial duress.

He said Australia Post remained committed to maintaining a network of at least 4000 retail stores nationally, but acknowledged licensed post offices faced challenges, with less demand for over-the-counter services and letters.
