The Independence Day weekend is set for an interesting Bollywood box-office battle as Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 and Sunny Deol’s Batwara 1947 arrive in cinemas on August 14. Both films come with established stars, strong nostalgia and very different audience propositions. But with both targeting the lucrative Independence Day weekend, the big question is: which film will win the box office?

On paper, Awarapan 2 has opened the race with a clear advantage. The sequel to Emraan Hashmi‘s 2007 cult romantic-crime drama has recorded significantly stronger advance booking numbers than Batwara 1947, suggesting that the film currently has greater opening-day demand.
But box office battles are rarely decided by advance booking alone. With a national holiday and a weekend ahead, can Batwara 1947 use strong word of mouth to close the gap? And can Awarapan 2 convert its impressive pre-release momentum into a big opening and sustained weekend collections?

Awarapan 2 vs Batwara 1947: Who has the advance booking advantage?
As of 8 pm on Wednesday, Awarapan 2 was comfortably ahead of Batwara 1947 in advance ticket sales. According to trade website Sacnilk, Awarapan 2 had sold 66,561 tickets for its opening day, with its tracked advance gross crossing Rs 2.16 crore across more than 3,742 shows.
Batwara 1947, meanwhile, had sold over 19,816 tickets, with its advance gross standing at around Rs 55.51 lakh. That puts Awarapan 2 significantly ahead in pre-release ticket sales and indicates a stronger audience pull going into August 14.
The difference is particularly important because advance booking is often one of the clearest indicators of opening-day box-office potential. While it doesn’t guarantee a hit, a strong pre-sales figure gives a film a sizeable head start, especially when it is releasing on a national holiday.
How much will Awarapan 2 earn on Day 1?
Trade analyst Rohit Jaiswal believes Awarapan 2 has a clear edge and expects the film to open substantially higher than Batwara 1947. According to his estimate, the romantic gangster drama could collect around Rs 20 crore on its opening day, while Batwara 1947 could earn between Rs 9 crore and Rs 12 crore if things go well.
“Awarapan 2 will have a better opening. One can expect the film to take a Rs 20 crore opening, whereas Batwara, in better condition, can at most touch Rs 9 to Rs 12 crore,” Jaiswal told us.
If that prediction plays out, Awarapan 2 would enter the Independence Day weekend with a sizeable lead over the Sunny Deol-starrer. However, the opening-day numbers are only the first part of the box-office story.
Awarapan 2 vs Batwara 1947: Why the budget matters
Interestingly, the two films are playing with very different financial equations. Awarapan 2 has reportedly been made on a budget of around Rs 50 crore, while Batwara 1947 has a reported budget of Rs 150 crore-plus.
That difference could become crucial when it comes to the films’ eventual box-office verdicts.
Even if Awarapan 2 opens at around Rs 20 crore and Batwara 1947 starts in the Rs 9-12 crore range, the Emraan Hashmi-starrer would require significantly lower box-office collections to recover its investment.
Jaiswal therefore believes Awarapan 2 has a comparatively easier path towards a ‘Hit’ verdict. In other words, this isn’t simply a battle over who collects more money. The budget-to-box-office ratio will also determine which film delivers better returns.
Why is Awarapan 2 getting a bigger opening?
There are several factors working in Awarapan 2’s favour.
The biggest is the Awarapan brand itself. The original 2007 film developed a loyal following over the years, with Emraan Hashmi’s intense performance and songs becoming an important part of its nostalgia value.
The sequel also benefits from the renewed interest in Emraan Hashmi’s romantic-crime persona. Its music, trailer and promotional material have helped revive memories of the original while introducing the franchise to a younger audience.
The advance booking numbers suggest that this nostalgia is translating into actual ticket purchases.
So, while Awarapan 2 may not have the widest family appeal, it appears to have a particularly strong pull among young audiences, Emraan Hashmi fans and viewers who have an emotional connection with the original film.
Can Batwara 1947 beat Awarapan 2 despite weaker advance booking?
Yes, and this is where the box-office clash gets interesting. Batwara 1947 may be behind in advance sales, but the Sunny Deol-starrer has a completely different audience proposition.
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film stars Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal and Karan Deol and is set against the backdrop of Partition. Its release also coincides with Independence Day, giving its subject matter a natural connection with the holiday weekend.
The film could therefore benefit from audiences who prefer historical, patriotic and emotional dramas, particularly older viewers and families.
And this is where word-of-mouth could become the biggest variable.
If Batwara 1947 receives strong reviews and positive audience feedback, its relatively modest advance booking could quickly become less important. Walk-in audiences and family bookings could push its weekend collections significantly higher.
Awarapan 2 vs Batwara 1947: Which film has the stronger audience?
Trade analyst Komal Nahta believes the two films are targeting sufficiently different audiences for the clash to work.
“Both are good enough in their own spaces, but they are different from each other. Batwara should appeal to the older generation since it’s centred around partition, while Awarapan 2 should be more appealing to youngsters because firstly, the film is a brand, songs have become popular and thirdly, the trailer also gives the impression that it’s going to be a film for the youngsters,” he told us.
That distinction could actually work in favour of both films. Awarapan 2 is positioned as a romantic-action drama with nostalgia, music and Emraan Hashmi, while Batwara 1947 is selling itself as a Partition drama with a patriotic and emotional core.
They are competing for the same weekend, but not necessarily for exactly the same audience.
Why the Independence Day weekend could be crucial
August 15 is one of the most valuable periods in the Bollywood release calendar. The combination of a national holiday, a long weekend and increased theatre footfall can give films a significant box-office boost.
Both films have therefore chosen a potentially lucrative release date.
Nahta believes the clash itself may not necessarily hurt either film. “I don’t think this clash could be risky. This is a fantastic Independence Day weekend, and both films have great potential to work well at the box office. They have taken calculated risks because neither wanted to miss this bountiful weekend.”
The extended weekend also gives Batwara 1947 an opportunity to recover if its opening day falls below expectations.
Likewise, if Awarapan 2 receives strong audience response, its already strong advance booking could translate into higher occupancy, stronger Saturday and Sunday collections and a potentially big opening weekend.
Sunny Deol vs Emraan Hashmi: Who has the bigger box-office pull?
The clash also brings together two actors with very different kinds of audience equity.
Sunny Deol comes into the release with the enormous post-Gadar 2 nostalgia surrounding him. His image as an action and patriotic star remains a major selling point, particularly for mass and family audiences.
Emraan Hashmi, meanwhile, has a strong connection with the romantic-thriller audience. The Awarapan brand gives him an additional nostalgia advantage, particularly among viewers who grew up watching his films and listening to his songs.
Interestingly, Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan have a long history of box-office clashes, from Raja Hindustani vs Ghayal to Gadar vs Lagaan. This time, however, the equation is different.
Aamir Khan isn’t competing with Sunny Deol. He is backing Batwara 1947 as its producer. That adds another interesting layer to the Independence Day box-office battle.
Can word of mouth change the Awarapan 2 vs Batwara 1947 box-office race?
This could ultimately be the biggest question. At present, Awarapan 2 is ahead on advance booking, opening-day buzz and pre-release demand. If the film delivers on the expectations created by its trailer, music and nostalgia, it could establish a strong lead by the end of the first day.
But if the film disappoints, the advance booking advantage could quickly lose its value. Batwara 1947 has the opposite challenge. Its opening numbers may start lower, but the film has the potential to grow if audiences connect with its emotional and historical subject.
A strong Saturday and Sunday jump, particularly from family audiences, could significantly narrow the gap. This is why the first weekend will be more important than the opening day alone.

Based on current advance booking trends and trade estimates, Awarapan 2 is the clear frontrunner for the opening day. Its reported advance gross of over Rs 2 crore is substantially ahead of Batwara 1947, while the current trade projection places its Day 1 collection at around Rs 20 crore compared with Rs 9-12 crore for the Sunny Deol-starrer.
But that does not automatically make Awarapan 2 the winner of the Independence Day box-office clash. The real test will be audience word of mouth, occupancy after the first day, Saturday-Sunday growth and the eventual opening weekend collections.
Awarapan 2 has nostalgia, music, a recognised franchise and strong advance booking on its side. Batwara 1947 has Sunny Deol, a patriotic Independence Day setting, a large ensemble cast and the potential to appeal strongly to families and older audiences.
For now, the box-office battle is tilted towards Awarapan 2. But if Batwara 1947 connects with audiences, the gap could narrow much faster than the advance numbers suggest.
The winner of this Independence Day weekend, therefore, may not be decided at the ticket counter on August 14. It could be decided by what audiences tell each other after walking out of the theatres.
