Bigfoot was investigated by the FBI.
Documents released through the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s FOIA Vault have revealed officials looked into the fabled beast between 1976 and 1977 in a bid to prove once and for all whether the elusive creature really is hiding out in the American wilderness.
The 22-page report includes correspondence between the Bigfoot Information Center and Exhibition (BIC) in Oregon and the FBI’s Scientific and Technical Services Division after BIC director Peter Byrne asked the agency to test a sample of hairs which had been collected and they had been “unable to identify”.
In the 1967 letter, Byrne wrote: “We do not often come across hair which we are able to identify and the hair that we have now, about 15 hairs attached to a tiny piece of skin, is the first that we have obtained in six years which we feel may be of importance.”
Byrne’s follow-up letter to the Bureau stated: “Please understand our research here is serious. That it is a serious question that needs answering …”
The FBI wrote back to Byrne explaining the agency’s laboratory “primarily conducts exams for law enforcement agencies in connection with criminal investigation” but agreed to test the sample “in interest of research and scientific inquiry”.
However, the investigation stalled after the lab results came back and proved the hairs tested did not come from Bigfoot.
A memo regarding the lab result reads: “The hairs which you recently delivered to the FBI laboratory on behalf of the Bigfoot Information Center and Exhibition (BIC) have been examined by transmitted and incident light microscopy …
“The hairs were compared directly with hairs of a known origin under a comparison microscope. It was concluded as a result of these examinations that the hairs are of deer family origin.”
The hairs were returned to BIC as requested and a thank you letter was written to the FBI on behalf of Byrne, who was out of the country on a trip to Nepal.
The letter read: “Thank you very much for sending the analysis of hair and skin … We are most appreciative of the work of Special Agent [name redacted].
“My conversation with him was most pleasant and informative.
“Mr Byrne is expected back from Nepal in a week or two and will receive copies of our correspondence.”
