A Small US town was sent into a Bigfoot frenzy after residents reported spotting a mysterious Sasquatch-like creature wandering through the streets.
Damariscotta, Maine, police said they received an “unusually high number of calls” about Bigfoot sightings on September 1.
The creature was reportedly spotted at five locations around town, including a grocery store, while it was also seen waving to students on their first day back at school.
But this was no terrifying beast lurking in the woods.
The mystery creature was also spotted wearing a top hat and asking passing truck drivers to honk their horns.
In a Facebook post, Damariscotta Police Chief Erik Josephson said officers launched a “lengthy, exhaustive, and completely serious investigation” into the sightings.
Their conclusion was considerably less exciting.
The alleged Bigfoot was actually a man dressed in a costume.
Chief Josephson stressed that “Bigfoot is not real”, although he admitted some officers were secretly hoping the investigation would uncover something extraordinary.
Officer William Smith eventually found the “elusive creature” sitting on Main Street and struck up a conversation with him.
Josephson said: “Despite our best efforts to gather compelling evidence, not a single Bigfoot grunt was heard.
“Frankly, there were members of our department who were secretly hoping we had finally stumbled upon something that would make national news.”
Rather than causing chaos, the mystery visitor became something of a local celebrity, with excited residents stopping to take photographs.
Some locals poked fun at the sightings online, with one joking that the costumed man looked “more like a large Yorkshire terrier” than a Sasquatch.
Another resident summed up the whole affair by writing: “You can tell we live in a small town”.
Police said the bizarre episode had nevertheless brought the community together.
They added: “A town full of people willing to stop what they’re doing to investigate a Bigfoot sighting and keep each other safe…honestly, we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Bigfoot remains a legendary creature in North American folklore, with reports dating back decades despite there being no scientific evidence proving the ape-like beast exists.
