A man has been arrested in Bijnor district of Uttar Pradesh for allegedly using a loudspeaker above the prescribed limit while giving the azaan at a mosque in Najibabad, police said on Sunday.

Police said Mohammad Faizan was arrested on Saturday and later sent to 14 days of judicial custody. The action followed a police visit to the mosque after information was received about the sound level.

Superintendent of Police K K Vishnoi said Faizan was allegedly exceeding the permitted volume while giving the azaan at a mosque near the Government Inter College in Najibabad. After receiving information about the matter, police personnel went to the mosque to check the sound level, he said.

Officials said Sub-Inspector Saurabh Singh later lodged a report at the Najibabad police station, following which Faizan was arrested. He was then produced before the sub-divisional magistrate’s court, which sent him to 14 days of judicial custody.

Earlier this month, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court took suo motu cognisance of the reported death of a Class 2 student in Balrampur, who collapsed in her classroom on September 22 while a procession carrying a loud DJ system was passing near her school. The court said it had not reached any conclusion on the cause of the child’s death, but added that the incident raised wider concerns over noise pollution and compliance with statutory norms. It directed the authorities to submit reports on the incident and started separate proceedings to examine steps to curb noise pollution.

In September, the Bijnor administration had also carried out a drive against loudspeakers operating above prescribed noise limits at religious places. During that exercise, loudspeakers were removed from mosques, temples and gurdwaras.

The arrest in Najibabad comes amid continued action by the authorities in Bijnor and wider judicial scrutiny of noise pollution and compliance with prescribed sound limits.
