Fashion and costume designer Bob Mackie, whose dazzling creations helped define the look of some of the biggest stars in entertainment, has died at 87, according to a statement posted on his social media accounts.
Known as the “Sultan of Sequins”, Mackie built a career around theatrical glamour, dressing stars including Cher, Dolly Parton, Tina Turner and Miley Cyrus. His designs became synonymous with show business, combining elaborate embellishments with silhouettes that were often daring, playful and instantly recognisable.

Mackie’s death was announced through his Instagram account. “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today. He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do,” the post said.
“His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”
Mackie rose to prominence through his work in television, film and stage productions, but his partnership with Cher became one of the defining relationships of his career. He designed many of her most memorable outfits for television appearances and tours, helping establish the bold visual identity that became closely associated with the singer.
He was also the costume designer for The Carol Burnett Show, where he was responsible for Carol Burnett’s wardrobe. His work on the programme helped turn costumes into a central part of the show’s comedy and spectacle.
FROM RHINESTONES TO RED CARPETS
Mackie’s flamboyant approach earned him a string of colourful nicknames, including the “Rajah of Rhinestones” and the “Guru of Glitter”. His elaborate use of sequins, beads and other embellishments became a signature of his work.
But his influence went beyond the stage and television screen. His archive continued to attract younger performers and designers, while elements of his aesthetic became increasingly visible in modern celebrity fashion and red-carpet dressing.
