Beloved Bondi Rescue star Matt Dee will be farewelled at a public memorial in Sydney’s east, just days after his sudden death was announced.
The TV star and mental health ambassador’s ashes will be spread at Bronte Beach, south of Bondi Beach, at midday on September 12.
In a social media post, the North Maroubra Surf Riders said it would be sending off “a true legend”.
“A man that had time for everyone, a larrikin, a brother to all, and a leader of the men,” the post stated.
“His time with us has come to an end, but we owe it to him to send him off in style.”
The club called on people to travel to Bronte to spread Dee’s ashes and “have a paddle out in his honour”.
“We will have a beer and share some stories afterwards,” the post stated.
Dee’s death was announced earlier this week in a statement by clothing brand FTW Revolution, which was co-founded by the star and focused on youth mental health and suicide prevention.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our Matt Dee,” the statement said.
“Matt touched the lives of many, he also did amazing work and he will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who knew and loved him.”
Dee appeared on the Australian hit reality show Bondi Rescue from 2008 to 2017.
He lost both his siblings, Rachel, 30, and Jonathon, 34, in 2009, having both lived with mental illness.
His grandmother also took her own life when Dee was 15-years-old.
Dee told Nine Newspapers previously that his siblings, which lived with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, had done their best to manage their illnesses.
“It wasn’t their fault. They had a problem inside their heads. It’s something we don’t understand. How would we know what it’s like?” he said.
Dee advocated for families to discuss mental health and was an ambassador Suicide Prevention Australia.
He also admitted to living with bipolar in a post to his clothing brand’s social media.
