A male officer has been stabbed in the neck and his partner slashed in the forehead after responding to a seemingly “routine” domestic disturbance call.
In the early hours of Sunday morning, police were called to a private residence in Brisbane’s eastern riverside suburb of Hemmant, after a father and son got into an domestic disturbance.
After arriving at the scene, officers engaged with two men at theproperty.
One officer was stabbed in the neck while another was slashed on the forehead.
Queensland Police Union general president Shane Prior said it was routine job of stopping a disturbance call between a father and son.
“During their interaction with this male person, he has unfortunately retrieved something from his person and has stabbed an officer in the neck and somewhere else in his upper torso,” he said.
Both officers gave chase as the alleged offender ran away from the house.
“This officer is a hero, while holding onto his neck to stop the bleeding, he managed to chase the offender and deploy a taser,” Mr Prior said.
“He only had to stop because he was getting weary from blood loss.
“This an example of police putting their life on the line for the community and in my books he is a hero and his partner is a hero.”
The officer had graduated from the academy in July and was only two weeks out of his mentor period.
He was a 40-year old man, married with two young children after spending most of his career with the Red Cross.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said they treated a male police officer who had sustained life-threatening injuries.
He has been taken to hospital, where his condition has been updated to stable.
Neither Queensland Ambulance Services nor the Queensland Police would comment on how the injuries occurred.
According to police, one of the men initially fled the scene on a bike before dumping it and continuing to run away on foot.
Police patrolled the area for another two hours before locating the man and taking him into custody at around 7am.
No charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
