A retiree has been left in tears after discovering his turned-off phone left him unaware he had become an instant multi-millionaire.

The elderly dad from Geebung in Brisbane’s north held the only division one winning entry nationally in last week’s Oz Lotto draw, taking home a massive $4m.

Officials from The Lott tried to contact the newly minted multi-millionaire every day following his win, before he finally called them back on Tuesday.

“Thank you! Sorry, I’m crying!” the retiree told The Lott.

“My son came around on the weekend and I was sort of at a loss while checking my ticket so he did it for me. He goes to me, ‘Dad, you’ve won $4m! You need to call into The Lott’.”

The winner said he was the type to always have his phone turned off, and wasn’t surprised he didn’t receive the phone calls last week.

“This gives me the chance to travel and see more things,” he said.

“My late wife’s family is from up North, so I’ll go see them as well.”

His winning six game pick was purchased from The Lott’s website.

The winning numbers in the draw were 4, 27, 43, 2, 21, 47 and 33, with supplementary numbers 17, 12 and 19.

The windfall pushed the division one winning tally to 247 this year, including 55 wins by Golden Casket customers.

There are more chances to win big with a $4m lottery on Tuesday, while Thursday’s Powerball has $20m up for grabs.
