Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah has stripped his daughter-in-law, Pengiran Raabi’atul Adawiyyah, of all her royal titles, citing conduct deemed “unbecoming” of a member of the royal family and saying her actions had tarnished the monarchy’s reputation.
The Office of the Grand Chamberlain of Brunei Darussalam confirmed earlier this month that the titles were revoked with immediate effect following a decree issued by the Sultan.

In an official statement, the office said the decision was taken because Raabi’atul Adawiyyah’s conduct was considered inappropriate for the spouse of a member of the royal family.
It further alleged that her actions had damaged the monarchy’s reputation and demonstrated a lack of respect towards Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. However, the statement did not specify the nature of the alleged misconduct.
State broadcaster RTB News also reported that the decision was based on conduct deemed disrespectful towards the Sultan and harmful to the image of the monarchy, though it likewise did not disclose any details of the allegations.
The 33-year-old Raabi’atul Adawiyyah is married to Prince Abdul Malik, 43, the Sultan’s son and fourth in line to the Bruneian throne.
Following the order, she has lost the title of Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri.
REASONS FOR REVOKE BEING SCRUTINISED
The development has drawn attention because, unlike previous instances in which royal titles were revoked following divorces, there has been no official announcement that Raabi’atul Adawiyyah and Prince Abdul Malik have separated.
In 2003, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah stripped his second wife, Mariam Abdul Aziz, of her royal titles after their divorce.
A similar decision was taken in 2010 following his divorce from his third wife, Azrinaz Mazhar Hakim.
Raabi’atul Adawiyyah married Prince Abdul Malik in 2015 during a lavish 10-day royal wedding in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan, attended by thousands of guests.
The couple have four children – Princess Muthee’ah, Princess Fathiyyah, Princess Khaalishah and Princess Nabeelah. According to reports, their children’s royal titles remain unaffected.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, 80, has ruled Brunei since 1968 and is the world’s longest-reigning monarch.
He heads the oil-rich Southeast Asian nation under an absolute monarchy and resides at Istana Nurul Iman, the world’s largest residential palace, which has 1,788 rooms.
