Carey Mulligan had to delay her CBE ceremony for a year because her husband Marcus Mumford was too busy to accompany her.
The 41-year-old actress was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by King Charles during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle in March, but The Great Gatsby has now revealed the event had been due to take place in 2025 and she had to postpone it by 12 months because she wanted her Mumford and Sons star partner to join her on the big day.
During an appearance on Deadline.com’s video series The Actor’s Side, she explained: “It was announced two New Years ago. So I knew obviously that it was [happening] and they offer you dates to go and do it and I couldn’t do any of them last year so this was finally I go and actually receive it …
“Ironically I wasn’t that busy – it was my husband. Marcus was really busy last year and I kept on getting a date and he was like: ‘I’m on tour’ or ‘I’m doing press’. And I was like: ‘I want to get my CBE!’
“I obviously wanted him to be there so it was Marcus’ availability that was the problem last year. But now I have it.”
Carey also revealed attendees at the ceremony don’t find out which member of the royal family will be handing out the honours until they there – and she was thrilled to receive her medal from King Charles.
She said: “You don’t know who is going to give it to you – it could be Prince William or Princess Anne or the King. You find out as you walk in who you’ve got … I got the King …
“As you walk in they said: ‘Ladies and gentleman, today we have the King’ and we all went [gasp]. Any of them [members of the royal family] are great, I’m not knocking any of them they’re all fantastic, but it was incredible [to have the King].
“Very surreal and I feel like I saw everything in technicolour and was in a bit of a dream world but it was really exciting.”
