A midnight birthday celebration organised by an Assam man for his wife on a Guwahati flyover has landed 14 people, including the couple, in trouble after a video of the event went viral and triggered public outrage. The group decorated the roadway with balloons, rolled out a red carpet and parked several cars on the flyover for the celebration. Police have detained those involved and seized four vehicles used during the lavish event.

According to investigators, the key accused, Gautam Baruah, organised the birthday party for his wife around 12:30 am on the night of June 22 on the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Flyover. Footage from the scene showed a section of the flyover decorated with balloons and party materials, while a red carpet was laid out on the roadway. Several vehicles were parked on the bridge as a group of people gathered to celebrate, the video showed.

Guwahati Police detained Baruah in connection with the controversial birthday celebration. Police said Baruah was questioned after the video of the event went viral on social media, sparking criticism over the misuse of public infrastructure for a private celebration.

Following the backlash, police registered a case against Baruah under Sections 125, 285 and 270 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The provisions include offences related to acts that endanger public safety and create a public nuisance, authorities said.

Police have also widened their investigation into the incident. The 14 people, including the husband and wife involved in the celebration, were detained for questioning. They said the investigation was ongoing and further action may follow based on the findings.

The incident reignited debate over the misuse of public spaces for personal events and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic and public safety regulations in the city.
