A 15-year-old boy went missing after he allegedly fell into an open drain while trying to retrieve a kite in southeast Delhi’s Jasola village, officials said. The incident led to a search operation involving the police, the Delhi Fire Service and the National Disaster Response Force.

The boy, identified as Mithun, a Class 8 student, went missing around 11 am on Saturday. Divers searched the drain for several hours on Saturday but could not find him, and the operation resumed on Sunday with multiple teams deployed.

According to police, Mithun was trying to catch a kite near the open drain when he fell in. Another boy who witnessed the incident informed the family, after which the matter was reported to the authorities.

Mithun’s family, originally from Uttar Pradesh, lives in the area and works as labourers in Delhi, relatives said. Kusum, a relative, said the family searched for him through the day after he went missing. “He had been trying to catch a kite when he fell into the open drain. Another boy who witnessed the incident alerted the family,” she told PTI.

Family members said Mithun was 15, studied in Class 8 and was good in studies. Relatives remained at the site as rescue teams continued the search, while authorities said efforts were on to locate the teenager and recover him as the circumstances of the incident were being ascertained.

The search for Mithun continued on Sunday after teams called off the operation late on Saturday night and resumed it the next day.
