The contract for a new multi-deck carpark in anticipation of a parking squeeze at the Murdoch Health and Knowledge Precinct has been awarded.
The 515-bay carpark at Lot 120 Barry Marshall Parade will be privately developed by Human Urban and built by PACT.
It will be near the entrance to the precinct, with vehicle access proposed via Wonnul Place.
Site works for the new multi-deck carpark will start from August and it is expected to become operational in late 2027.
A new western multi-deck carpark is also being constructed by Georgio Group on the corner of Jennalup Street and Winch Way as part of the new Women and Babies Hospital project.
This carpark will provide about 1500 staff bays and is expected to open in mid-2027.
Three temporary staff carparks will be opened at Wonnul Place, Murdoch University and Bibra Drive in a bid to provide adequate parking throughout construction.
About 1000 health workers are expected to lose their parking spots when work starts on the hospital.
Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the multi-deck carpark would help futureproof the precinct and relieve parking pressure for patients, staff, and visitors.
Health Minister Meredith Hammat said the precinct was one of the busiest and fastest-growing in WA.
“Ensuring patients, visitors and our healthcare workforce can access our hospitals safely and efficiently is an important part of delivering quality care,” she said.
“This additional parking capacity will support the expanding precinct as we progress construction of the new Women and Babies Hospital, helping ensure the infrastructure around our hospitals keeps pace with the increasing demand for health services.”
The City of Melville supported the carpark when it considered it last year.
City statutory planning manager Kate Bainbridge told a city briefing last July there was a “significant” car parking problem in the area, especially with new projects such as the hospital.
“We’ll continue to see car parking pressure in this precinct until such time as we have more more public transport and more residents hopefully in that area in the future,” Ms Bainbridge said.
