Two men have been arrested and charged after they allegedly tried to fly a drone carrying drugs and other contraband into a correctional centre in southern NSW on Friday.
At about 1.10pm on Friday, police were told a drone had been spotted flying over the Cooma Correctional Centre in Cooma, a small town located about 120km south of Canberra.
Police eventually located two men, aged 31 and 38, at a park on Barrack Street, who were allegedly in possession of a drone box, drone controller, mobile phones and SIM cards.
”Following inquiries, officers allegedly located and seized a drone with an attached package from a nearby creek,” NSW Police said.
“During a search of the package, police allegedly located and seized an amount of tobacco, prohibited drugs, a mobile phone and several other items.”
The items were taken for forensic examination, and the two men were both arrested and taken to Cooma Police Station, where they were charged with operating a drone in prohibited airspace, unlawfully attempting to deliver items to inmates, and supplying cannabis.
Both men were refused bail to appear before a local court on Saturday.
