Courtney Love has struggled to cope with the pressures of fame and success.

The 62-year-old star rose to fame as the lead vocalist of the alternative rock band Hole, which she formed in 1989 – but Courtney admits that she wasn’t comfortable in the spotlight.

She told Interview magazine: “This thing about being famous and just the impetus, I didn’t have the guts for it. I didn’t have the social skills or the infrastructure.

“I hadn’t gone to school, I didn’t know how to make friends with people very well.”

Courtney still has vivid memories of touring the world in the early 90s, when she was left to fend for herself by her record label.

The music star said: “If you were pop, you’d get support. If you weren’t, it was on merch. And I was like, ‘Could you please make tiaras? Could you please make barrettes?’

“The ones that I paid for myself that I had made in China, they’re now, like, 400 bucks on eBay. Because I was right, and they were wrong, and I’m glad that today I’m around to tell the tale.”

Courtney previously admitted that she’s endured lots of ups and downs during the course of her music career. And the singer confessed that failure can be “really hard to overcome”.

Asked about the challenge of staying inspired to write music, Courtney told Interview magazine: “I’ve had some successes and I’ve had some failures, and failure is really hard to overcome.

“I don’t have a lot of advice because I haven’t done it, but I’m trying to do it. It’s so hard. I think the stuff you have to do is super plebeian. You’ve gotta stay weird and you’ve gotta exercise.

“If you’re an addict or something — which I am — you’ve gotta pray. And then you’ve gotta sit down and write 20 longhand pages. This has to be small writing, the smaller the better.

“You write pages of s***. It doesn’t matter what you write. It’s your way of releasing something creative in your life every morning. It’s so dumb, but it helps. You’ve gotta feel safe to fail.”
