Police are investigating the deaths of a couple who were reportedly found trapped in a jacuzzi in their holiday villa.

UK-based pair Thomasina and Patrick Tobin were reportedly found dead in an outdoor jacuzzi in Cullera in Spain by their teenage children.

The couple were understood to have suffered fatal heart attacks as a result of physical exhaustion from trying to escape from the jacuzzi.

Local newspaper Las Provincias reported that “the victims suffered cardiac arrest brought on by acute stress following physical exhaustion and the desperation of the moment”.

The London couple were enjoying a fortnight away at the Spanish resort when the tragedy happened.

Local authorities were alerted on August 25 when the couple’s children, reportedly aged 14 and 16, found the pair unresponsive in the outdoor tub.

Initial injuries on both bodies initially prompted homicide police to attend the scene, but suspicious circumstances have since been ruled out.

It’s now understood police have changed the focus of their investigations into whether a freak accident involving suction fittings on the jacuzzi stopped the pair from being able to get out of it.

According to Las Provincias: “According to the first investigations, the excessive suction force would have imprisoned the couple inside the bathtub, which triggered a situation of extreme anguish and desperate physical effort to free themselves from the hydraulic grip.”

Cullera is a popular holiday city, 40km south of the nearest major city, Valencia.
