NSW coach Laurie Daley says Jack Bostock’s aerial prowess delivered him an Origin debut over Blues stalwart Brian To’o, as Haumole Olakau’atu’s handling of his controversial game two axing triggered a recall for next Wednesday’s decider in Brisbane.

Daley has made five changes as the Blues bid for one of the biggest upsets in recent Origin history at Suncorp Stadium, with To’o the most notable casualty of a backline shake-up.

To’o, Kotoni Staggs, and Tolutau Koula have all been dropped from the Blues’ game two backline, with Dolphins flyer Bostock handed an Origin debut on the left wing as Stephen Crichton and Bradman Best also come into the centres.

Daley said the decision to hand Bostock – who has been part of the Dolphins’ surge up the NRL laddder – an Origin debut, wasn’t made lightly.

“It’s not so much height we were looking at. We were looking at a different option with the ball in the air to attack with,” he said.

“Because there are so many more contested possessions in today’s game, you need to be able to get off the ground, catch the ball, and make it a contest.”

Olakau’atu, who played in Origin I only to be left out of the game-day 19 for NSW’s heavy loss at the MCG in game two, has responded well to feedback from Daley and his staff.

“We spoke to Haumole when he didn’t make game two about what we were looking for. Since then, he’s gone back and played well for his club and done what we asked him to do,” Daley said.

“Those conversations are private. If Haumole wants to tell you, he’ll tell you. He knew what we needed to see. It’s been a good response from him.”

More to come.
