Toby Greene has backed Jeremy Cameron to rediscover the form that made him just about the AFL’s best player when they are reunited at Geelong.
Greene’s high-profile move from GWS to the Cats as an unrestricted free agent will put him in the same forward line as Cameron, who struggled this season with injury.
Cameron, who previously played with Greene at GWS, has had off-season surgery to fix an arm problem. He struggled for top form this year after breaking his arm in last year’s grand final loss.
“I’m not worried at all. He had fix-up surgery and that will be sore for another month or two, but he will hopefully be good as gold,” Greene said on Friday.
“He’ll be hungry and ready to go, I’m sure.
“Two years ago he was the best forward in the comp – the best player in the comp, just about.
“He’ll be dangerous next year, I’m sure.”
Greene was in Melbourne at a promotion for the Cox Plate, but will not be at Saturday’s race. He had to fly back to Sydney and help pack their house for the move to the Surf Coast near his new club.
The former Giants captain is fresh from a Noosa family holiday with Cameron.
“It’s good having him on the boat – he knows what he’s doing,” Greene said.
Along with recruiting Greene, the Cats also traded for Rowan Marshall and Jordan Ridley as they aim to stay in premiership contention.
At 33, Greene said the move was mostly about family, but also the lure of a new opportunity at the end of his outstanding career.
He added the decision did not come easily. While Greene is no fan of the pre-season, this time he is keen to meet new teammates and start work at the Cats.
“It doesn’t feel real yet until I get in, day one, and meet everyone and pull on new training clothes, I guess,” he said.
“It’s also different … it is really exciting.
“I was very to-and-fro for a few weeks there and wasn’t really clear with my decision. But I eventually got there and I’m looking forward to a new challenge.
“It slowly, slowly came and moved really quickly from there.”
There has been speculation that Greene might eventually become Geelong captain, given how well he filled the role at GWS.
Greene laughed when the question was put to him.
“I don’t think that’s on the money,” he said.
He said Tom Green, Connor Idun and Jack Buckley are all strong candidates to take over as Giants captain.
“There are some good ones … they all have really good leadership credentials,” he said.
