David Boreanaz had “no idea” what a phenomenon Buffy The Vampire Slayer was going to be when it first started.

The 57-year-old starred as Angel in the show, opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar in the titular role, and its spinoff Angel.

However, in an interview with The Upcoming, David insisted he was totally unaware of how popular the programme, which ran from 1997 to 2003, was to become.

Asked if he had any clue, David replied: “None whatsoever! You’re just kind of blessed to be working and being part of something that’s unique.

“You start out really small and then it becomes this kind of gigantic energy – this ball of energy that was becoming bigger and bigger and bigger, and somehow try to sustain that and hold on to it – it has its ups and downs.

“I thoroughly enjoy all those rides and don’t take them for granted and really live in them as i live today. It’s like, what’s the now, what’s the experience of where I am and what I’m doing

All great moments.”

Elsewhere in the interview, David opened up about how being a producer has changed over the years, especially now that streaming is arguably one of the most popular new ways to watch shows.

He mused: “Everyone wants it faster. As a producer you want to be efficient, you want to shoot it differently, you want to know where your cuts are, you want to be effective on cost.

“A good producer understands finance but also understands the creative process.”

David, who co-produced his show Bones and is also producer on his upcoming series The Rockford Files, continued: “As a producer of my generation, I love to inspire the director, inspire the actors. In a way that makes them feel free and loose, and with that efficiency comes.

“I’m not drilling in things that have to be done, I’m not counting, I’m not an accountant, I’m not a studio head. I’m just a creator and I love to inspire.”

The Rockford Files is a remake of the US TV series of the same name, which starred James Garner and aired between 1974 and 1980.

It’s scheduled to premiere next January (27).
