A late-night police operation in Delhi turned into a brief but intense gunfight after two wanted criminals allegedly opened fire on a police team during a planned trap, prompting retaliatory firing in which both were shot in the legs and arrested.

A joint team of Lajpat Nagar Police, the Special Task Force (STF) and the Anti-Auto Theft Squad (AATS) had laid a trap based on specific intelligence about the movement of two wanted men, Parmod Kumar alias Tutan and Rajesh, who were allegedly arriving on a stolen motorcycle to commit a crime.

Around 12:15 am on the intervening night of June 29-30, the suspects arrived at the spot near Jal Vihar in South-East Delhi. As police signalled them to stop, the duo reportedly abandoned their motorcycle and opened fire at the team in an attempt to escape.

Police returned fire, injuring both accused in their right legs. The duo was overpowered and taken into custody before being shifted to Safdarjung Hospital for treatment.

Officials said the exchange of fire lasted only moments but was intense enough to prevent the suspects from fleeing. From the spot, police recovered one illegal pistol with magazine, one live cartridge, one country-made pistol, three empty cartridges fired by the accused, and four empty cartridges fired by police personnel.

Parmod Kumar alias Tutan is a known repeat offender with a criminal history spanning around 113 cases, including robbery, snatching, attempt to murder and Arms Act violations. His associate Rajesh also has around 15 criminal cases against him.

Police said the arrest of the duo has led to the detection of four pending snatching cases, with further investigation underway to ascertain their wider criminal network and recent movements.
