According to an Education Ministry official, Professor Yogesh Singh has been reappointed as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Delhi for a fresh term of five years starting October 2026.
The President of India has approved his reappointment for another five-year term beginning October 2026. Singh becomes the first Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University to serve two consecutive terms after a change in university statutes made such an extension possible.

Singh, who first took charge as the 23rd Vice-Chancellor of DU in 2021, will continue leading one of India’s most prestigious universities into its next academic phase.
Until recently, Delhi University statutes did not allow a Vice-Chancellor to be reappointed for a second term. However, in 2023, the Centre revived an older proposal and amended the university rules, paving the way for continuity in leadership at the top post.
POLICY CHANGE THAT MADE IT POSSIBLE
Earlier, the Delhi University Act explicitly barred reappointment of Vice-Chancellors. The amendment introduced in 2023 removed this restriction, making Singh’s second term legally possible.
Officials said the change was aimed at ensuring administrative continuity in large central universities like DU, which handle complex academic, research and examination responsibilities across thousands of students and faculty members.
A CAREER SPANNING KEY INSTITUTIONS
Before joining Delhi University, Singh briefly served as Vice-Chancellor of Delhi Technological University in 2021, although he did not complete the term after moving to DU.
He has also held senior academic and administrative roles over the years, including Director of Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (2014–2017) and Vice-Chancellor of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (2011–2014).
At Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, he served in multiple positions including Dean of the University School of Information Technology (2001–2006), Controller of Examinations (2006–2011) and Director of Students’ Welfare.
