A new footpath in Delhi has left social media users wondering whether it was designed for pedestrians or for the rainwater beneath their feet. The stretch, made of concrete blocks riddled with square openings, was meant to let water seep into the ground, but its unusual design has raised questions about how easy it would be to walk on.
In a now-viral video circulating on social media, a man was seen walking along the footpath and showing off the freshly laid interlocking concrete pavers. Each block featured a lattice-like pattern with several large square holes, leaving much of the surface open.

As the camera moved along the stretch, the man pointed towards the openings and explained, “This is the new footpath made in Delhi, so that water can seep through the holes and get into the ground.”
The clip also showed dirt and early signs of weed growth around some of the gaps, while the pavers had been laid around poles and trees.
X account India Tech and Infra shared the video, writing, “Delhi is introducing new footpaths across the city.”

The design also prompted a debate over whether the pavers were being used as intended. Some users pointed out that the gaps were supposed to be filled with gravel, allowing water to pass through while keeping the surface durable.
Others were less convinced, calling the construction an example of poor development work. A few also questioned how practical the footpath would be for everyday pedestrians, particularly women in heels, and worried about small belongings accidentally falling into the openings.
