Alex de Minaur’s hopes of reaching the ATP Finals have taken a hit with the Australian slipping out of the list of leading eight players battling to reach the end-of-season men’s championship.

Following Rafael Jodar’s charge into the Shanghai Masters final, de Minaur has slipped to 10th — effectively ninth with Jannik Sinner’s season over because of injury — in the ATP’s ‘Race to Turin’ that determines the top-eight to play in Italy next month.

And in what may feel frustrating for ‘Demon’ as he seeks to make it to the big show for the third year running is that he now faces a fallow week in which he can’t pick up critical Race points, while fellow contenders will be continuing to push their claims at ATP events in Lyon, Almaty and Brussels.

De Minaur had much earlier in the season decided this would be a week when he would play instead in the lucrative Six Kings Slam exhibition tournament in Saudi Arabia, where there were no ATP points but only a fistful of dollars on offer.

But that event has been postponed until December amid continuing unrest in the Middle East and attacks at Riyadh’s main international airport, leaving de Minaur kicking his heels while fellow contenders scrap to add another potential 250 crucial points to their tallies.

Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton have already booked their places for Turin, with, in all likelihood, nine other contenders jostling to earn the other five spots.

De Minaur has 2880 points but Jodar moved past him onto 3159 after losing in the Shanghai final to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Sunday.

Others who can increase their points advantage over the Australian this week are Flavio Cobolli (3540), who’s playing in Lyon, Daniil Medvedev (3420), who’s in Almaty, and the Brussels-bound Arthur Fils (3325).

The Sydneysider will at least get a refreshing week after an encouraging return to something like his best on the Asian swing, and there are plenty of points still to shoot for when he returns to play in a stacked ATP 500 field at the Vienna Open next week before the potentially decisive Paris Masters.

It’s all so tight that there’s still a danger de Minaur could be eclipsed by those chasing him, headed by the great Novak Djokovic, who has surprised many by taking a wildcard for the Swiss Indoors ATP 500 event in Basel, to be held in the same week as Vienna.

Currently, the seven-time Finals champ Djokovic, seemingly rejuvenated by his China Open triumph in which he beat de Minaur in the final, is just 40 points behind the Aussie in 11th place.
