Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had reportedly submitted his resignation to the Office of the Supreme Leader, citing his government’s diminishing role in key decision-making processes and growing influence of hardline factions within the country’s power structure.

According to reports, Pezeshkian sent an official resignation letter on Sunday in which he expressed frustration over what he described as the effective exclusion of the presidency and the government from major national decisions. The report said the Iranian leader argued that this situation had created a vacuum that allowed hardline elements, particularly within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), to exert greater control over state affairs.

In the letter, Pezeshkian reportedly stated that under the prevailing circumstances, he was unable to effectively administer the government or fulfil his constitutional responsibilities. He therefore requested permission to step down immediately.

‘BASELESS AND RIDICULOUS MEDIA GAME’

However, Iran’s presidential office has strongly denied the reports, calling it “baseless” and accused foreign media outlets of spreading misinformation. They also claimed that the reports were part of a “ridiculous media game” and reflected “wishful thinking rather than reality.”

Citing an informed government source, the IRGC-linked Tasnim News Agency reported that Pezeshkian remains in office and continues to discharge his presidential responsibilities.

Separately, Seyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, Deputy Head of Communications and Information at the President’s Office, dismissed the report published by Iran International as unfounded. In a post on X, he accused the foreign-based outlet of spreading misinformation and said the claims were part of a continuing attempt to create a false narrative.

“The rumour-mongering by the disreputable foreign network is a continuation of previous ridiculous media games. They have published their own wishful thinking in place of reality,” Tabatabaei said.

He further asserted that Pezeshkian remained committed to his duties, adding, “President Pezeshkian will not retreat from serving the people, just as the Iranian nation will not step back from the path of solidarity and resistance.”

The development follows months of reported friction between Pezeshkian’s administration and Iran’s military-security apparatus. Iran International had earlier reported that the IRGC had gradually curtailed several presidential powers and expanded its influence over key areas of governance.

‘THE SITUATION IS NEITHER ORDINARY NOR SIMPLE’

Amid the speculation, Pezeshkian recently acknowledged the difficult challenges existing in Iran currently, describing the current situation as neither ordinary nor simple. He said managing the country required coordination, dialogue, empathy and responsible decision-making. Stressing the need for transparency, the Iranian president said citizens should be informed about the realities facing the country, including its capacities, limitations and shared responsibilities.

Pezeshkian also noted that continuing external pressures and restrictions had created significant challenges for governance, and warned that changing circumstances could require the adoption of additional policies and strategies. He urged national media to present a realistic picture of internal conditions alongside coverage of international developments.

Pezeshkian, who took office after campaigning on promises of reform and greater engagement with the international community, has faced significant challenges in translating those goals into policy amid Iran’s complex power structure.
