Twenty-five years after Dil Chahta Hai introduced a new rhythm to friendship, love and growing up, its leading men came together once again. Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan and Farhan Akhtar reunited in Mumbai on Friday, to mark the film’s 25th anniversary. Their reunion, however, was missing one familiar face – Akshaye Khanna, who played the third member of their iconic trio.

Videos and images from the gathering showed Aamir, Saif and Farhan posing together, bringing back memories of the film that went on to become a defining coming-of-age story for a generation. Dimple Kapadia, who played Tara in the film, was also present, as was co-producer Ritesh Sidhwani.
Farhan made his directorial debut with Dil Chahta Hai, which starred Aamir as Akash, Saif as Sameer and Akshaye as Siddharth, or Sid. The film’s portrayal of three close friends navigating relationships, adulthood and the changing nature of their bond struck a chord with audiences and has continued to find new admirers over the years.
Saif has previously spoken about Farhan’s approach to his first film as a director. Recalling his experience on the set in a conversation with Variety India, he said, “We were laughing most of the time because Farhan wore it all very lightly. It was like he was born to direct, with the ease with which he was on a set. There was no tension, really.”
About Dil Chahta Hai
The film revolved around the friendship between Akash, Sameer and Sid as they entered different phases of their lives. Sameer, a hopeless romantic, moves from one relationship to another, while Akash dismisses the idea of love until he meets Shalini, played by Preity Zinta. Sid, meanwhile, develops a close relationship with Tara, an older woman played by Dimple.
At its heart, however, Dil Chahta Hai was about the three friends and how their equation changed as they grew older. Their Goa road trip, conversations about love and friendship, and the eventual distance between them became some of the film’s most memorable moments. Over time, the film grew beyond its initial reception to acquire a lasting cult following.
The film also stood out for its contemporary treatment of urban youth, from its fashion and music to its depiction of friendship. Its soundtrack, composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy with lyrics by Javed Akhtar, remains closely associated with the film even 25 years later.
